Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
