Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
