Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot showcasing angels, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The latest chapter finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of heroes who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table features Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

With a large ensemble, it was evident from the start that having everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, intertwining the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Strategists, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for participants who prefer a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the developments of the third episode demonstrate why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a violent initial meeting with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—used the foes for his selfish purposes, invading Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and swiping all the magical artifacts to sell off.

Casimir then paid off his obligations and fled to a fortified location in the northern region, beyond the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each adventurer has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan has experience in the northern area and warns that it is a dangerous location.
  • The strong character and The healer, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their reputation as prominent individuals in House Halovar could assist the party reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The fighter pledged a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The cleric defied the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • Teor is marked for death by House Halovar.

This leaves them little choice but to head to the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s follow-up content, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the players to round up the Questers and Schemers groups.

Viewers can anticipate discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, streaming live on October 24.
